The research project is in theoretical chemistry and addresses the motion of atoms in molecules and during reactions. The student will use a technique called simultaneous diagonalization (SD) to make basis functions that are localized in both position and momentum. According to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Relation it is impossible to perfectly localize both coordinates and momentum. SD will allow us to achieve the best possible simultaneous localization. The student who works on this project will learn to solve an interesting scientific problem. S/he will learn a lot about spectroscopy, numerical methods, and linear algebra.
