Presentation Title: Working at the Interface of Science, Technology, and National Defence.

Presentation abstract:

This seminar will provide a broad overview of what is involved in being a scientist working for national defence. Starting with a review of the historical interplay between science, national defence, and international affairs, and how that relationship persists to this day. Working in the defence science domain may involve working within international partnerships, doing research and development (R&D) to overcome shared technical challenges, or providing technical advice on matters of national significance. Science continues to play a key role in supporting national defence, not just in times of conflict, but also as a means of deterring and avoiding conflict, and even used diplomatically to foster more peaceful relations between countries. This talk will also outline differences between how science is done in the public sector compared to academic science. By exploring these differing domains in which R&D is done, it may offer perspective and more options for finding one’s place in the broader scientific enterprise, to lead, and to produce impactful work.
