Abstract:
There is a need for African scientists to enhance the drug discovery capability and capacity of the continent to address its health needs and use science for economic development to create jobs and provide career opportunities for young people. Historically African-led health innovation has been hampered by several factors, including but not limited to poor access to infrastructure, limited enabling technology platforms and the scarcity of a critical mass of skilled scientists.
This lecture will introduce the Holistic Drug Discovery and Development (H3D) Centre at the University of Cape Town (http://www.h3d.uct.ac.za/) and describe its infrastructure, programs and initiatives to support drug discovery on the African continent.
