Sir Fraser Stoddart, who is the 2016 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, has been a NRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Queen’s Chemistry Department from 1967-1970. During this time he was in the group of Prof. J.K. Jones, but was effectively supervised by Walter Szarek, who had been hired only a year earlier. It was Walter Szarek who directed Stoddart’s research interests from carbohydrate chemistry (Jones’ work) to the, then new, area of macrocycle synthesis and chemistry.
