Derek Andrew Pratt was born in Ottawa, Canada on April 10, 1976. He grew up in the east end, attending Orleans Wood Elementary School, Henry Larsen Elementary School and Colonel By Secondary School before heading to Carleton University in 1995. After changing his major three times, Derek settled on Chemistry, and managed to graduate on time with a B.Sc. in 1999. Prompted by a great experience as an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Keith Ingold’s laboratory at the National Research Council, Derek continued on to graduate school.

In the fall of 1999, Derek relocated to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. Ned Porter at Vanderbilt University. His doctoral training, supported by an NSERC Julie Payette Postgraduate Scholarship, included the synthesis and study of two-photon photoactive inhibitors of serine proteases, the thermodynamics and kinetics of peroxyl radical reactions important in lipid peroxidation processes and the design, synthesis and study of novel radical-trapping antioxidants. |
|
In the summer of 2003, Derek moved on to Prof. Wilfred van der Donk’s laboratory at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. His post-doctoral training, supported by a Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral Fellowship, involved mechanistic studies of the Vitamin B12-catalyzed dehalogenation of groundwater contaminants, synthesis and studies with mechanistic probes of lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase catalysis and model studies of the properties of the unusual histidine-tyrosine crosslink in cytochrome c oxidase. |
