Funding

The guaranteed minimum stipend for the 2017-2018 academic year is $23,000 per year for both M.Sc. and PhD. students (international students receive an additional $6000).  Students are responsible for tuition and fees. This financial support can come from a variety of sources and can differ from student to student.  These sources include:  supervisor research grant support; external scholarships support (NSERC); Graduate Teaching Assistantships (TA); and internal scholarship support. This support is guaranteed for all full-time graduate students up to two years of a M.Sc. program and up to four years of a Ph.D. program.

All eligible students are encouraged to apply for external awards such as NSERC and OGS

All new domestic students (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) who have an NSERC scholarship and who accept an offer of admission into Chemistry for September 2017 or January 2018 will receive an additional $8,000, over their scholarship amount, in the first year and $6,000 in subsequent years.

To receive the minimum stipend of $23,000, students not having scholarships are required to perform four TA units unless their supervisor volunteers to increase the RA portion.  Scholarship students perform either one or more units or no units.

Applications for Bursaries are also available to qualified students on the Students Awards web site.

For more information about funding and award information see the School of Graduate Studies website.

Determining Your Minimum Stipend Amount

If you hold an NSERC scholarship, your stipend may be different from that of students without such scholarships; use the tables below to determine your minimum stipend amount.

For 2017-2018 (1 TA unit of teaching assistantship (TA) corresponds to roughly 5 hrs of undergraduate laboratory teaching per week per academic term @ $2,358.60/term)  (2 TA units per term for two terms =  $9,434.40)
