An introductory course in organic chemistry with emphasis on structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds; extensive use of examples from industrial process chemistry. The use of physical methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy to determine chemical structure is discussed. Lecture material is supplemented in the laboratory by a study of common methods for the preparation, purification and characterization of organic compounds. |
